WITH reference to the letter titled Suitable Speed (Warrington Guardian, June 15) on speed limits at Warrington Road, Penketh.

Mr ‘Name and address supplied’ implies that I am not aware of defensive driving and that I should walk round with a red flag.

I will point out that I have passed three driving tests, all first time, car, motorcycle and the institute of advanced motorcyclist test which was more than two hours long with a police motorcyclist. This involves observation, defensive riding to the speed limit at all times.

I like to drive fast at times but in safety, maybe on a track or the autobahn, not in a built up area where other road users and pedestrians are at risk.

The reason the speed limit is 30mph is because a pedestrian has more chance of survival in a collision at 30mph than at 40mph, this is why the speed limit was imposed to be unsafe at 40mph and will not be changed by those who are not competent in assessing everyday traffic risk and hazards.

There have been many accidents, some resulting in fatalities of both adults and children on Warrington Road and Sankey Way over the years.

Road safety cannot and will not be taken lightly and as for Sankey Way it wouldn’t be so bad if drivers stuck to 40mph but this isn’t the case.

I can hear vehicles on this stretch from where I live, it sounds like a drag race most of the time, many are driving well over the 40mph limit and it is rarely policed.

There are no speed cameras and the results of this can be seen some days, for example cars that have left the road.

If motorists adhered to the rules of the Highway Code there wouldn’t be a problem.

Many that pass the driving test quickly forget or disregard what they have learnt and set their own rules, instead of building on their driving skills and road safety.

Editor’s note, in a letter published earlier this month we wrongly printed that police had been enforcing yellow lines on Hood Lane.

We would like to point out that the letter should have said ignoring illegal parking. We apologise for the error.
