GARY Bebbington’s missives are always a source of amusement, none more so than his latest (Warrington Guardian, April 20) proposing a relief road from Walton drag to Crosfields roundabout.

Gary you should pick up a map – the A-Z would do – before you pick up your pen as you seem to dismiss a few minor difficulties here.

Firstly there is the ship canal to be crossed, before coming to two sets of rails of the West Coast mainline, both on very high embankments and a fair sized tunnel under these in close proximity to the canal.

It is clear across the meadows, but then you arrive at the Mersey and also a still existent rail line to Fiddlers Ferry.

The present plan through Slutchers Lane with the one-way system from Warrington bridge is the only alternative other than a tunnel such as Conwy’s which cost, I think, some £300 million in 1980s money.

I may be wrong but I seem to remember much of this came from the EU.

Not an option this time.
