I WAS there when the chimney, which was part of a disused tannery, was demolished (Warrington Guardian, April 6).
I’m pretty sure that it was for a Greenall’s TV advert with Fred Dibnah.
Out of shot of the photograph was a three or four-storey building and I was one of a group of people on the roof watching this event.
As the fire was lit at the base of the chimney the wind was blowing in our direction and the smoke, including the accumulated grime in the chimney, came straight towards us. The group of us included some folk from Warrington Development Corporation and may (I’m not quite sure) have included my colleague at Robert Davies & Co, Christopher Hatton, who was chairman of Greenall Whitley at the time.
