I REFER to the letter in last week’s Warrington Guardian (March 16) from M Smith of Great Sankey who claimed Warrington shouldn’t bid to become City of Culture because it is just a small town between Manchester and Liverpool.

What absolute nonsense.

Why do some people in Warrington insist on this ridiculous small town mentality?

Should England not have to bid to host the Olympics because we are small country between the US and Russia?

Should Liverpool not have tried to become European City of Culture because it is smaller than Paris or Rome?

We need ambition and forward thinking from our politicians and this is exactly what this is.

Wouldn’t it be great if in 10 years time we could all go to a theatre in Warrington rather than being forced to travel to Liverpool or Manchester?

Would you not rather plan your weekend around a concert, market or cultural event in Warrington rather than Old Trafford?

Have some ambition.

Warrington is one of the biggest and most successful towns in the north west.

It will be a city within 20 years, there is no question about it.

Quit this small-minded, insular outlook and dream about what might be.

You never know, something good might come out of this.

It is costing very little and it will bring investment that will help bring jobs and more wealth.

But maybe you are happier living in your small town.

It is bizarre thinking and I just don’t understand it.
