WHILE reading the March 16 edition of the Warrington Guardian I was not surprised to find that the highways chief has been urged to look at the effectiveness of 20mph speed limit zones.

These were rolled out across the borough between 2012 and 2015 at a cost of £643.860.

Paul Kennedy opposed the roll-out and still questions their effectiveness.

Being a resident of Culcheth and living on one of these 20mph roads, I witness drivers who are my neighbours treating these signs as if they were non-existent on a daily basis.

Other roads in the area like Lodge Drive, Wellfield Road, Twiss Green Lane and Hob Hey Lane are all abused daily.

Motorists’ speeds are frequently in excess of 30mph let alone 20mph and are unreasonable for this type of side road in a built up area.

My view is that firstly these zones need better signage as often there is just one or two small circular signs staggered over a long stretch of road which can easily be missed.

To be more effective I feel that 20mph should also be painted on the carriageway accompanied by other speed calming measures, for instance the dreaded speed humps.

I know these are not popular but do ensure that most drivers will slow down because signs alone are a waste of time and money.

The downside is that these measures would require a further cash injection which due to financial cuts I doubt the council would be willing to spend.

In an ideal world it would be great to see motorists abiding by these 20mph speed zones but in reality a certain breed of driver cannot even comply with other speed limits and traffic laws let alone 20mph.
