I AM glad to read your support of our demand to Peel Ports to paint the three bridges crossing the Manchester Ship Canal (Warrington Guardian, January 12).

As you say we have been requesting this for more than two years and get nowhere.

I don’t understand how Peel can be so successful when it doesn’t seem to accept what the most inexperienced householder knows – that maintenance jobs don’t disappear.

If you don’t tackle a problem when it starts it gets worse, it doesn’t go away.

Perhaps they are waiting till the bridges rust and fall into the canal.

It is also strange that the cost they quote has risen by more than 200 per cent since we first approached them two years ago.

Then they said it would cost £200,000 – creative accounting indeed.

With Peel politeness doesn’t work, shaming doesn’t work, MPs’ arguments don’t work.

Can anyone come up with anything else we can try?
