IF I were to say to you that proportional representation should be an issue right at the top of British politics, what would your reply be?

I expect many reading this will say surely that top of the agenda should be matters like the state of the economy, the NHS, immigration, government policy on a humanitarian crisis, the environment, or perhaps Brexit.

How we elect our elected representatives, ultimately determines government policies in all of the above policy areas and many more.

In the General Election of 2015 the current Conservative government got 51 per cent of the seats and 100 per cent of the power on just 37 per cent of the vote.

Also of significance is that the last Labour General Election victory earned Labour a bigger parliamentary majority on an even smaller share of the vote.

Is this right?

No it is not. We need to have governments that are more representative of the country as a whole. We need this to get better policies in all those policy areas.

Furthermore you can do something about this.

You can sign a petition set up by Make Votes Matter requesting a full parliamentary debate on the subject at petition.parliament.uk/ petitions/168657.

Finally, once you have signed this petition why not contact David Mowat MP or Helen Jones MP?

If you live in Warrington South the message is one of unfairness that if you don’t vote Conservative or Labour then effectively you are wasting your vote.

If you live in Warrington North, the message is that as a safe seat which is almost certainly going to forever return a Labour MP, then you are among the least powerful voters in the country.
