THE news this week that the Natwest bank in Culcheth is to close its doors next May, is yet another blow to the community (Warrington Guardian, December 8).

It joins an ever growing list of small shops, pubs, places of worship, the library and other community assets that are threatened with closure or have closed.

They tell us that the bank is not doing enough business to warrant a branch and yet it is my experience that it is always busy serving businesses and private customers alike.

No-one will lose their jobs apparently, which personally I find hard to believe.

Culcheth Post Office will take on the job of coin exchange and face to face banking on behalf of Natwest.

God knows what the queue will be like on benefit payment days or at other peak periods.

Of course it will no longer be Natwest’s problem.

It is a sad fact that the loss of community assets causes less people to get out and meet others.

We are therefore pushed into a society where we are hard wired to the internet or mobile phones.

Is this really progress?
