PETER Magill’s column in the Guardian last week was read with interest.

As he says, the RAF Burtonwood Association has been the guardian of the memory and history of Burtonwood since the US Army left the site in 1993.

Besides our ever growing heritage centre at Gulliver’s (free entry) we organised a very substantial memorial window in St Michael’s Church, Burtonwood, for future generations.

Additionally we worked with David Wilson Homes to develop Dakota Park at Chapelford, having a name linked to both the ubiquitous Douglas C-47 Dakota transport aircraft and the US state of the same name.

Similarly we agreed with the developer and Warrington Borough Council that the street names at Chapelford should all reflect the American heritage.

Several years ago we financed and presented a memorial plaque to the M62 service area at Burtonwood which was proudly displayed until it was stolen.

Another plaque was unveiled in Golden Square but was removed when the area was redeveloped.

The developers of Omega are working with us to provide a substantial memorial at the entrance to Skyline Drive (named after the Service Club on the base) plus a second memorial in the proposed residential area which will be close to Burtonwood Road, as that development proceeds.

This is on the actual airfield site and close to the Hamilton Pickett fort gun emplacement which is listed by Historic England and will form part of the memory.

The feeder road to the North Omega site is named Lockheed Road to reflect the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter of which 4,381 passed through Burtonwood between 1942 and 1945.

We have a thriving RAF Burtonwood Association which has reunions in the US every year and UK on alternate years, produce an in-house quarterly magazine, Burtonwood Times, a website, Facebook page and host visits from youth and adult groups to the heritage centre.

So Burtonwood is in no way forgotten or inadequately honoured for us all to remember its glorious past and incredible impact on the north west of England and world peace.

Our whole aim is ‘to keep the memory alive’.
