I AGREE with Derick Acton regarding the paucity of the referendum debate (Warrington Guardian, September 1).

The benefits of a United Europe are difficult to put into sound bites for easy consumption, but the quitters’ campaign could appeal to base instincts and provide simplistic arguments that are simply not standing up to scrutiny, that core value of democracy.

In Parliament lying politicians are subject to it and voted out at the next election.

What scrutiny are the quitters subject to?

Even if they come up with a plan it will be, in Robert Peston’s words, ‘May’s Brexit not the leave campaign’s’.

She has no idea.

The G20 conference in China has been a huge embarrassment for her.

Statements like ‘Brexit means Brexit’ might go down well with the bloke in the pub, but for world leaders trying to ascertain what is happening it is a disgraceful negation of international responsibility.

So Derick you use the quitters’ stock phrase ‘get over it’ as though democracy ceases once you get your own way.

Who was it again who said that on the steps of the Reichstag in 1933?
