MR Speers suggests a national holiday to mark the recent referendum (Warrington Guardian, June 30).
I have seen an online petition calling for an ‘Independence Day’.
Such a title may look good on a cinema billboard but is politically contentious.
Many felt that we were already independent. Indeed we may also now find ourselves having to follow rules that we no longer have any say on.
Should we really be celebrating, in perpetuity, a result won by a slim majority that was preceded by a divisive campaign that split the nation and has been followed by an increase in hate crimes and other signs of division in our nation?
If we are to hold an annual public holiday I would suggest that we celebrate our diversity.
United Kingdom Day could celebrate that we are all part of our national mix and belong here regardless of our of race, creed, national origin, sexual orientation etc.
