I READ that Nick Bent has now joined the band of politicians trying to shame Peel Holdings into painting the London Road swing bridge (Warrington Guardian, January 28).

For the past few years the bridge has struggled to close in hot weather and high winds and this points to the fact that the mechanism that drives the bridge is crying out for attention.

If the would-be hopefuls took the trouble to go to Latchford Locks they would witness the dilapidated state of the wonderful legacy the Victorians left in our care.

It is now time the Government stepped in to force Peel Holdings to spend some of the millions of pounds that it has made out of the peppercorn price they paid to gain control of the waterway and all the land associated with the canal on fixing the bridges and cleaning them up.

The Liberal Democrats made publicity out of painting the milepost on the bridge, why didn’t they carry on and finish the job?

They claim they are fixing everything in the village, even claiming it was them who persuaded United Utilities to refurbish the war memorial.
