NICE to see some Warrington residents in the New Year’s Honours list.

I did happen to notice how Len Davies has (justly) been recognised for his contributions to rugby union.

This served to highlight the national view.

An ex-colleague of mine taught and managed many school teams at rugby league since 1971, when he started teaching in Warrington.

Over the years he gradually rose in stature until he refereed at the curtain raisers to Challenge Cup finals.

This particular teacher officially retired five years ago but still returns to the school to mentor pupils, act as pastoral advisor and, of course, help out with the rugby (league) teams.

Obviously league doesn’t have the same prestige as union.

I only ever played rugby union myself and appreciate the skills and complexities of both.
