FURTHER to my last letter about traffic in Warrington, I have frequently viewed the AA live traffic reports for Warrington and it is apparent that the same sections of road are affected regularly.

I decided to try and see if there was any real reason for this, thinking that there was just very heavy flows of traffic at certain times.

This was obviously a case at the rush hour periods. In some cases it appeared that traffic congestion was a full time feature of certain roads.

I then decided to travel via Cromwell Avenue towards the junction with Winwick Road.

Encountering queueing traffic all along Cromwell Ave from Old Hall Road heading to Sankey Way (already blocked solid) I assumed that it was a problem caused by the M6 being blocked.

Carrying on to Winwick Road, my journey was brought to a halt with queueing traffic from just before Callands Road. When I did get to Winwick Road it was severely congested up to the new set of lights that were installed at the new entrance/exit to the Alban Retail Park.

After that, the rest of Winwick Road was fairly free flowing. It appears that if a car leaving that site causes the lights to change then the whole of the north end of Winwick Road grinds to a halt.

There were three changes of lights here, in my journey from Cromwell Ave and this point, to let out one car at a time holding all other traffic up. From that point to the traffic island at Cockhedge it was free flowing.

Then at the Cockhedge island the traffic lights were in action and the whole of Brick St and Fennel St were blocked because of the traffic lights in operation.

Once again traffic was left dangerously positioned at these lights due to the tailback from the lights into the A49 south bound.

Onward along Midland Way, to encounter traffic, sticking out at the Crosfield Island heading toward Lovely Lane etc. So traffic in Warrington is impeded by bad planning and poor traffic light co-ordination.
