ANYONE of whatever political persuasion can and in my opinion should once a year remember the many who have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we now enjoy.

I myself, having served in Her Majesties Forces, have always been proud to wear my poppy and have attended numerous remembrance parades and am always proud to stand and sing our National Anthem.

Mr Lawton recently stated that he does not sing or stand for our National Anthem and Mr David Ball (Warrington Guardian, October 22) stated that he commends Jeremy Corbyn for not singing our National Anthem also.

The memorial services are in memory of all those service men and women who gave their lives for our nation of which our head of state, national flag and anthem are symbolic and why we all stand and sing in memory of them and pride in our nation for which they gave their lives.

Perhaps Mr Brinksman would let everyone know if he thinks their action, or lack of it, is a contradiction?

During my Army service I do recall, although never actually being in direct action against the IRA, having constant training exercises to be ready to counter IRA terrorist attacks.

‘IRA attack, out of your beds’ was the call in the middle of many nights.

Mr Brinksman’s response to Corbyn and terrorist connections is just to say it is ‘outright lies’.

Perhaps he would substantiate that assertion.

It will also be of legitimate interest and concern to many Warringtonians as to Anne Travers, whose 22-year-old sister Mary was shot dead in the back, her father six times and her mother had a gun pointed point blank at her face, surviving only because the gun jammed as they were leaving church – by the IRA.

She wanted to know why, when asked ‘five times’ on Radio Ulster to condemn the IRA for what they did, Corbyn would not.

Anne Travers said: “It was an insult to all our dead loved ones. I am shocked that an MP who could lead the Labour party into government, would find it so difficult to say those five words.

If Mr Brinksman would like to contact Anne Travers to offer an explanation why Corbyn won’t, he can do so via Stephen Nolan of Radio Ulster, or the Irish Times newspaper.

They are waiting. Somehow like Mr Corbyn, I don’t think he will be forthcoming.
