WITH the plight of the NHS spiralling into meltdown due to financial irresponsibility and PFI now we have the refusal of doctors and consultants to accept change in respect of working hours and conditions.

Doctors, consultants and GPs have to understand that the working pattern of business and people’s lives has changed considerably in the past 20 years Long gone is the Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm pattern.

Businesses now operate a 24/7 operation and most people work a shift pattern that includes working most weekends.

It is now time the doctors, consultants and GPs step into line and the 21st century worklife. They, like everyone, should be expected to work weekends and offer medical services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In short they need to wake up and smell the coffee.
