FURTHER to the recent letters regarding the RSA’s misguided report on Warrington’s lack of culture which I hasten to add was even reported in The Times newspaper.

Nothing of course could be further from the truth regarding our town’s history and culture, as many of your readers have stated.

I believe that the main problem lies with our council when it comes to our town’s heritage.

A former Mayor of Warrington told me some years ago that Warrington Borough Council is not interested in the heritage of the town.

I entirely agree with this argument and is confirmed by the disgraceful attempt to remove our coat of arms, which thankfully has been restored, and the equally short sighted desire to sell off the family silver.

I refer to the national treasure in the Parr Hall, mainly the Cavaille Coll organ, which incidentally will be played by soloist Jonathan Kingston on October 26 (Editor: More details on page 6 of this week’s Warrington Guardian).

The Times article of a few weeks ago featured the grave of George Formby, a man born in Lancashire and buried in Lancashire and the derogatory statement that our museum has a few stuffed hedgehogs.

But our town is more than George Formby and Lancashire, and indeed has a rich history.

It is time that our misguided council, whose idea of culture seems to be pubs, clubs and cafes, began to make the most of that history and promoted it.
