I read with incredulity the views of your columnist Peter Magill and his desire for Warrington (and especially Orford) to accept many more refugees.

His beliefs also seem to be shared by several correspondents.

I disagree with this.

Firstly there is the question of provenance and authenticity, for all Peter knows these so called refugees could be criminals or terrorists.

Maybe Peter just wants to let them in so that he can impress Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader?

David Cameron’s description of these people as ‘swarms’ is appropriate, but I prefer Margaret Thatcher’s quote that we are being ‘swamped’ by them.

The other problem is infrastructure and services.

In a nutshell Peter, we’re full up.

We live on a small and overcrowded island, there is insufficient housing-stock, our hospitals and schools are struggling and transport links are stretched to the limit.

Enoch Powell explained his objections to mass immigration.

Here’s one sentence from the speech: “We must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependants, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population.”

Those levels are far exceeded every year now, and if it was left to Peter Magill and his kind, it would be far higher.

And finally, the majority of these ‘refugees’ are young males, fit and strong.

Why aren’t they back home and helping to fight for their own communities?
