EVEN though it is July, it is still not too late for some of Warrington’s drivers to adopt a resolution for 2015, one that could save death or injury.

The suggested resolution is, when you see a traffic signal go red in front of you, stop.

In my experience, it is possible to stand at almost any signalled junction in Warrington, watch the lights change, and witness drivers deliberately sailing blithely onwards through the red lights, or even accelerate towards the junction as the lights go red.

On occasion when I have stopped at a red signal, I have even witnessed a car from behind me overtake and go through.

The risks are so obvious that they do not need spelling out.

Clearly there needs to be a raising of the penalties.

Loss of the offending driver’s licence for a year and some evidence of the problem being taken more seriously by Cheshire Constabulary might be a useful starting point.

What do other readers think?

Perhaps the Guardian could try snapping a few offenders, too, and publishing the results. And a statement from the police would be appropriate.
