YESTERDAY I saw a woman cycling along the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal with a small infant in the kiddy-seat behind her.

This was on the section going towards Lymm between the M6 bridge and the A56 bridge.

I am familiar with this part of the towpath and as an experienced cyclist am well aware that this is a tricky section, being well rutted and obstructed in places by projecting tree roots.

Last year a cyclist fell in the canal, opposite where I live, and had great difficulty extracting his bike from the murky waters.

The lady cyclist possibly does not appreciate the extent of the danger here.

If she were to fall in then the chances of rescuing the child, doubtless strapped to the seat, would not be good and I entreat her to think again before attempting this dangerous manoeuvre.

This route may be free from the perils of motor traffic but the canal poses a threat all of its own.
