I REFER to a column from Pete Magill in the Warrington Guardian complaining that Halton and Daresbury in particular are not doing anything to commemorate the 150 years of the publication of Alice in Wonderland.

He appears to have gathered information from all over the world but has failed to come out of his office and enquire from the people on his own doorstep who he is critical of.

He has only to come to Daresbury Church, where Lewis Carroll’s father was vicar, where Lewis Carroll was born and where the Lewis Carroll Centre is situated, to learn that the church will be holding an exhibition in the centre and in the church, starting on the first day of the National Heritage Open Days which begin on September 10 to the 13.

Chester Cathedral is holding an event throughout July and August and Llandudno is having an Alice weekend on May 1 to 3.

He states that The Lewis Carroll Birthplace Trust opened The Lewis Carroll Centre.

The Lewis Carroll Birthplace Trust has nothing at all to do with the Lewis Carroll Centre.

This lovely, informative building is there, and maintained, due to years of hard work by members of Daresbury Church.

I agree that Daresbury is in the Borough of Halton but the correct postal address is – Daresbury, Warrington WA4 as is Preston-onthe- Hill but Preston Brook is Runcorn.

If he wishes to know why, I suggest that he contacts the Royal Mail and not criticise civil servants.

Perhaps J Clarkson is not the only cantankerous old fool throwing his weight around, but at least J Clarkson does get his facts right and apologises when he doesn’t.

IRENE RUTTER
Chairman of The Lewis Carroll Centre
