FOLLOWING on from International Women’s Day last Sunday, Warrington Green Party is calling for proper representation of women when it comes to the ballot box.
Currently only around 22 per cent of Warrington borough councillors are women and at the last General Election only 143 out of 650 MPs elected were female.
We believe this is bad for democracy because good decision making should be based on a real representation of the electorate.
The Green Party, through our recruitment process, actively encourages women to stand as candidates.
Female members are encouraged to stand and if no women step forward as candidates at the first time of asking, nominations must be reopened for a second time.
Warrington and Halton Green Party’s candidates for the General Election are women, as is our candidate for the Fairfield and Howley borough council ward and several other candidates.
We hope that more women will put themselves forward at both local and general elections, and also that women will also use their vote on May 7 so that women have the chance to influence decision making to everyone’s benefit.
STEPH DAVIES
Leader, Warrington Green Party and candidate for Warrington South
