WHAT is it with weekday morning road users on Knutsford Road heading towards Bridge Foot?

On my regular journey to work, I was on my usual route driving down Knutsford Road in the left hand lane where, upon reaching the bus lane which starts immediately after St Mary’s Street, I came to a halt proceeding to indicate right to merge with traffic in the right hand lane.

Upon which at least eight cars immediately bunched up tighter than a duck’s back passage and simply refused to allow me into their lane.

The last two vehicles in particular took it upon themselves to chastise me for my actions. And for what? For adhering to the rules of the road dictated to us all by our government?

Adding insult to injury, a young man in a silver Vauxhall Astra immediately behind me in the left lane, then proceeded to sound his horn at me for blocking the road.

So what was his problem? More to the point, why was he not following my actions to merge into the right hand lane?

It became apparent this morning that not only has common courtesy between fellow car drivers become an archaic and dying trait but the rules of the road simply don’t apply to these young drivers.

Surely being as young as they are, it would make sense that the Highway Code would be fresh in their minds?

I am not a pensioner by the way nor am I an old ‘fuddy duddy at 43.

Did I accept the tongue lashing I received from all three drivers concerned? No, I felt I gave as good as I got this morning, and ashamedly my choice of words was not fit for the ears of my 16-month-old daughter who was in the back of my car at the time.

Feeling pleased that I have got this off my chest, I will move on to contact Warrington Borough Council to inform them that the road markings on Knutsford Road are clearly insufficient.

Perhaps this is why that during the past five years of making this specific journey, I have counted only three occasions our boys in blue have been seen policing this zone.
