ALTHOUGH short term, I have been unfortunate enough recently to experience life as a ‘wheelchair pusher’.

After an accident, my mum was temporarily in a wheelchair due to her inability to walk for any distance.

Each day we would consider places to go, and found ourselves very limited at the places available.

In a society where we are expected to cater for all individuals, we found that the layout of buildings, both new and old, and facilities meant that many places in the Warrington area were out of our capabilities.

In Stockton Heath, many coffee shops and shops either have a step to get in, or have a tightly-packed layout, therefore we are unable to manoeuvre safely around.

With this in mind, we alternatively went to the Gemini retail park and thought the Costa in Next would be more manageable. Unfortunately this was not the case and as we were again unable to move around the tightly-packed tables.

In the town centre, parking was difficult as we don’t have a blue badge, due to the wheelchair hopefully being a temporary measure.

Normal spaces are tightly packed so Mum was unable to get out of the passenger side and I was unable to fit the wheelchair down the side for her to get straight in.

Due to the difficulties faced with pushing a wheelchair up an incline, I often have to take an alternative route and go round the Mall to the opposite side, as the incline isn’t as steep.

As this didn’t seem possible due to time restraints and other issues, I pushed the chair past Next, Bank etc and had an asthma attack at the top.

We are lucky enough to no longer be needing a wheelchair, but I feel the need to express my concern due to the other people who face these challenges regularly.

I ask the people involved to take this letter into consideration and look at the facilities available to people who are struggling.

We should all be able to experience the same opportunities and think that this should be taken into consideration.
