WARRINGTON thrives because of its motorway access, and rail connections.

We are surrounded by three major routes and the West Coast main line, there are two major cities and airports within a 30 mile radius.

London is just two hours away.

But after the past couple of months it is clear our town is at a tipping point, our roads just cannot take any more.

At the mere whiff of a breakdown, or failure of traffic lights we grind to a complete standstill.

When a motorway closes then we might as well get out and walk whether we are in our own car or a bus.

Every morning people leave the overcrowded motorways and cut through our town and villages to rejoin after all the jams.

People leave the M62 at junction nine to avoid the M6 interchange then cut through Winwick, Croft and Birchwood to rejoin at junction 11 It is the same on the south side with people often cutting the corner to leave the M6 South and join the M56 at Stretton.

Nobody moans on forums or in the WH because of any accident we all moan because the road infrastructure across Warrington and the motorways surrounding us are incapable of coping full stop.

In the past three months the M62, the M56 and now the M6 have all had serious accidents and closures and on each occasion the residents of Warrington on the whole suffer.

The main diversion routes are the A49 or A50.

There are 38 sets of traffic lights across Warrington from the Swan in Winwick along the A49, seven miles to The Cat and Lion in Stretton. It's nearly the same to The SpringBrook down the A50.

That's a lot of stopping for 30 seconds over and over again.

Not really helpful when you're being diverted or on a normal day!

It is not just those who use public transport or those in their own cars. We all suffer.

All of us are entitled to whinge a little but I am certain not a single person who does is putting the lives of those involved in any accident below their own inconvenience no matter how frustrating but WBC need to start considering that this is not going to get any better without some changes or additions to our road network across the town soon and not just an aspirational route across the Mersey as proposed in the Warrington Guardian a few weeks back.

Whilst you (WBC) celebrate the business investment and housing development, in places such as Omega or the old Greenalls site proclaiming it good for us all there has been no major investment in road and transportation links in years.

But without it the future of our town holds a real risk there will be no further investment because people will be unable to get anywhere.

If you do not do something soon to ease the pinch points around the motorway network in north and south Warrington then the 20 mph signs you spent a ridiculous amount erecting across town may turn into aspirational speed targets rather than limits.

Yours In a jam
