AFTER 31 years of trading as Julie’s Looking Glass in Warrington Market, it is with great sadness that I closed on November 6.
I started my business as a 19-year-old, having worked as a Saturday girl on a clothing stall. I loved market life so much I set up my own business. I have enjoyed every minute of my time on the market.
Bridge Street was a hive of activity 31 years ago. But gradually, as the recession hit, the small retailers found themselves unable to survive.
This has resulted in boarded-up shops and 'for sale' and 'to let' boards. The internet and the supermarkets have ruined small businesses.
The high street now belongs to coffee shops, charity shops and phone stores. As Lawrence Bailey wrote on your business page last week, the small retailer needs to be encouraged back to the high street/market with affordable rents and rates for them to become viable again and offer a good shopping experience.
So after many years in the market, a big thank you to my loyal customers who have supported my small business. Thanks for all your kind words, cards and gifts.
To my fellow market traders and many friends made over the years, you are a great bunch of people offering excellent personal service to the people of Warrington.
I wish you all the best for the future of the new market. And I urge folk to visit the market and support these small traders.
