I WOULD like to set out the actions I’m taking on local concerns about transport issues.

First, I’m working with our Labour council to ensure we get a new train station at Chapelford and Sankey station remains open.

I’m meeting Northern Rail again this week to press for more improvements to Sankey Station (which I use daily) and a Sunday service.

Second, I support the Atlantic Gateway project and the agreement with Peel Ports about the ship canal swing bridges.

But tougher measures may be needed to stop appalling congestion on our roads. I have proposed some new ideas, including a possible Independent Tribunal.

Third, I attend regular briefings about transport infrastructure and fully back the council’s plans for new roads to bypass Bridge Foot and a new High Level Bridge over the ship canal.

As I announced at Labour Conference, Mary Creagh MP, shadow transport secretary, will visit soon to discuss how Warrington can get the investment and innovation it needs so that people here get a fair deal and our town’s economy can prosper.

Fourth, I am launching a petition to get Tory ministers to cancel the new road tolls on the Runcorn Bridge and new Mersey Gateway Crossing.

The Tory MP in Halton has got tolls scrapped for residents there. The Tory MP here has failed to get the same result for Warrington drivers. Some people may think it’s harsh to call the Tory MP’s efforts on this 'hopeless'. Most would use words that are unprintable.
