I WONDER how many taxpayers are aware of how much they have been saving on their council tax bills over the past few years?

Warrington’s Labour council, along with most Labour councils, have elected again not to freeze the council tax and take advantage of the one per cent from central Government, but instead have elected to go the route of increasing rates up to the maximum allowed by the government of two per cent.

Instead of taking the one per cent offered from the Government and finding savings themselves to represent 0.9 per cent, they have chosen to, again this year like last year, increase our rates by 1.9 per cent for 2014 to 2015.

Even so, the savings have been significant over previous years if you check. If a Labour government had still been in control, a Band C would now be paying nearly £1,500 per year, continuing the average 4.3 per cent yearly increases we have had under Labour.

It is apparent that, over the seven years under a Labour government to 2010 to 2011, we paid four times more on council tax than we have done under the current Government. The Labour Warrington council put up the rate, on average, each year for seven years, 4.3 per cent per year.

Under the Coalition, our council tax has gone up on average just 1.05 per cent per year.

At the same time, because the government has managed to keep interest rates low, council tax has also been kept under some control.

And Nick Bent says a Labour government is on your side?
