IN reply to the letter that Mr Smith’s is a monster, (Opinion, July 24). I am not much concerned about the old ‘Ritz’ building, but the Parr Hall is different.

This same subject was raised some years ago, with the same descriptions that it was hideous, out of date etc, all the usual clichés, and the council should sell it and use the money for something else.

A friend of mine, Alderman Boyle, then told the council that it was not its to sell, and the Parr family gifted the Parr Hall to the people of Warrington, not the council, which is only the custodian.

A number of councillors at the time were surprised to learn this, but Alderman Boyle was found to be correct and the council did not have the authority to sell.

I have travelled up and down Lancashire, Cheshire and Staffordshire and I have found that the Parr Hall is a much finer building than some that I have visited. It also has a Mayor’s Parlour – we should cherish such buildings.

Building a new concert hall has been mooted several times in the past, but somehow it has never materialised.

I am not against this sort of enterprise, but even with the increase in population in the borough, could interest be maintained after the initial first few months?
