COULD somebody please explain why a wide, straight road like St Mary’s Road in Penketh/Great Sankey is now 20mph when there is nothing that actually goes on to it like schools, nurseries, old people’s homes?

Yet Stocks Lane which is a much narrower highway with, in some parts, very narrow pavements plus a primary school, two nurseries and an old people’s home, is still set at 30mph. I have been in touch with the council which says it has to stay at 30mph because it is a through road but so is St Mary’s Road, albeit a bit of a dog leg.

A representative on the telephone has said that the council would put repeater marks down to remind motorists that it is a 30mph road but when this will be done is anyone’s guess. It would not be a problem if motorists kept to the speed limit but cars coming down off the bridge seem to think it is a signal to put their foot down and speed along the lane. At night it turns into a rally track.

Seeing as the buses have also now changed direction and larger vehicles are being used this also makes it more hazardous. I pity the parents trying to walk their children to school and people using wheelchairs, as part of the pavements are very narrow and usually have vehicles parked on them as well. Surely something can be done.
