THERE are many fine buildings in Warrington but, in my opinion, Mr Smith’s is not one of them.
Apart from the little round tower it looks like a monster shed hulking over a part of the town that needs improvement.
Like many post-war Warringtonians I can remember the names of many of the films I saw when it was the Ritz, but memories alone are not enough to justify its preservation. I hope that the council will ensure that it is replaced by some really stylish and contemporary buildings.
The other building in town which is hideous inside and out is the Parr Hall. Would it not be a good idea to sell this off so that it can be replaced by something elegant which would improve the town’s most beautiful square and park. Perhaps the council could then use the money to acquire part of the land at Bridge Foot to create a modern concert hall and theatre complex which we need.
