Mr Smith's is a monster

Mr Smith's is a monster

THERE are many fine buildings in Warrington but, in my opinion, Mr Smith’s is not one of them.

Apart from the little round tower it looks like a monster shed hulking over a part of the town that needs improvement.

Like many post-war Warringtonians I can remember the names of many of the films I saw when it was the Ritz, but memories alone are not enough to justify its preservation. I hope that the council will ensure that it is replaced by some really stylish and contemporary buildings.

The other building in town which is hideous inside and out is the Parr Hall. Would it not be a good idea to sell this off so that it can be replaced by something elegant which would improve the town’s most beautiful square and park. Perhaps the council could then use the money to acquire part of the land at Bridge Foot to create a modern concert hall and theatre complex which we need.

DR MICHAEL MURPHY

the sad thing is its not up to the council what will replace the old "Ritz" "ABC" cinema , sleazy drugs related numerous night clubs, but I am sure the owners have something lined up for the land after the building is demolished, and it will be demolished

Standard no one cares about the building until it's threatened with demolition and suddenly it becomes a 'local treasure'.

People like Michael Murphy make me sick. Why doesn't he tear the whole town down, eh?

The fact is that this building IS a local treasure and MUST be saved.

It's bad enough to see my mum's favourite shop, The Waysiders, getting sacrificed for some posh coffee shop.

Well it's not going to be saved so get your polaroid out and take your last snaps!

Tis the wheels of progress turning once again and Warrington council doesn't own a lot of property now nor did it ever apart from their social housing stock and a few civic buildings. They should take more care of the infrastructure, but, waite a moment hasn't that caused its own issues when most of the services are either privatised poor at coordinating work with each other and reliant on nonexperts to make planning decisions and design alterations to our beloved Warrington.

Warrington will constantly change as it always has done ...

Someone needs to culvert the Mersey and ensure free passage across the Mersey between the Old Warps Weir and Gateworth.

What are your thoughts on that?

Mr Murphy, needs his head testing.
Have you seen what kind of buildings they throw up now days. if you think its going to be replaced with something more desirable I suggest you take a long walk down Winwick road and look at the tesco, decathalon, bathstore... that's the kind that would replace it.

Worryingly a quick search reveals a "Dr Micheal Murphy" suggests if the same person (and based on the labour supporting and other similar frequent WG ramblings he seems to think the public would be interested in his opinion too highly), he is the secretary of "Warrington and district arts council (WADAC)"..

Now seeing as the two buildings he would have destroyed are warringtons current theatre venue and Mr Smiths being toted as a possible arts theatre...this is a worrying development and if the same person I call for his sacking from the role.

wadac, who until now I had never heard of and I have been involved in warrington arts for 20 years cant even finish their own website never mind take on the merits of an opinion on such a project as this. http://www.wadac.org
