IN response to a reader's question asking about a new road from Chester Road to Great Sankey, the council spokesman refers to the high cost of having to bridge the Manchester Ship Canal, River Mersey and West Coast Main Line.

In fact a route already exists which surmounts all three of those obstacles.

This is the Trans Pennine Trail route from Chester Road via Taylor Street, Westford Road and Eastford Rd, then 500 yards of cycle path (which would need converting to road) into Forrest Way, Barnard Street and Old Liverpool Road. It’s Sankey Bridges, not Great Sankey, but close enough.

It would probably have to be one-way because of the narrowness under the railway bridge, improvements would be required at the final junction, and it would be unsuitable for HGVs. But, in view of the present congestion at Bridge Foot, it would help.
