WHY does Warrington still celebrate Walking Day?
We natives who remember the walking days of old find today’s processions a poor reflection of past walks.
I no longer go into town as it is quite upsetting to see how what was once a colourful spectacle has become a rather drab occasion.
There are several reasons for abolishing the walk; church congregations are smaller these days; there doesn’t seem to be much effort in making the procession interesting to watch – no decorated prams or flower baskets; most inhabitants of today’s Warrington were not born in the town and therefore have no connection or fondness for the walks; shops (including the market) stay open; it seems to benefit the pubs mostly and finally, 90 per cent of the time it rains!
