Disgusted by costume
1:08pm Friday 4th October 2013 in Letters
THE idea of a ‘mental health patient’ costume being manufactured and retailed shocks and disgusts me – in my capacity as chairman of 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and St Helens Mind and on a basic human level.
I see people with mental ill-health whose lives have been blighted by prejudice and stigma; people who are subjected to hurtful remarks made out of sheer spite or – more often – as a result of total ignorance.
Our service users at 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust asked for our ‘Sticks and Stones’ campaign because they were sick and tired of the kind of stigma this Halloween costume reinforces.
Every local authority in our footprint and many more businesses made a corporate commitment to work towards stamping out stigma. I would urge other businesses to take the same approach and consider how their decision-making impacts on the mental well-being of their community and employees.
In schools we have created teaching packs, decided to support lessons around mental health, learning disabilities and stigma. They can be downloaded at 5boroughspartnership.nhs.uk/schools-and-employers/ free of charge.
Let’s hope that through education the next generation of business owners and consumers make better choices.
Bernard Pilkington 5 Boroughs chairman
