MARATHON season is most definitely underway.

Well done to those who ran Manchester, and enjoyed a free pint at the end I hear, on Sunday and good luck to all the runners heading to London this weekend.

Meanwhile, Boston took place on Monday and this time next week I’ll be in Prague.

I got sidetracked in last week’s column by the revelation male distance runners are more attractive to the fairer sex – although my own research has proved inconclusive – but, fear not, I have been in training.

I completed my last long run with just over three weeks to go, grinding out 20 miles after work – not the quickest commute by any means.

From The Academy, I made my way over to the Trans Pennine Trail and after a mile or so this meets the Bridgewater Canal, which handily runs past my flat in Salford.

It was a beautiful route on a gorgeous day, winding up through Lymm, Little Bollington and Altrincham, although a number of canal-side pubs with punters a plenty on a Friday evening certainly tested my resolve.

However, it’s ‘no pints before Prague’ and I’m sure there will be other sunny days this summer to sample Cheshire’s finest.

Last Wednesday I had my final pre-marathon outing with Endurance UK’s Brian New, soaking up some advice about the race build up from a man who certainly doesn’t lack any experience when it comes to long-distance events.

A good group of us, including Brian’s marathon runners and triathletes, left David Lloyd and headed out for a fast-paced 10 miles along the St Helens Canal towards Widnes and back.

Meanwhile, I’ve been attempting to settle into my target marathon pace in some tempo runs with the group in Birchwood.

I’ve found them helpful and a confidence boost, and hopefully Louise Blizzard and Tony McCarthy will feel the same as they head to the capital on Sunday – good luck!

I’m pushing hard to reach my target for St Rocco’s Hospice, which really is a worthy cause, so any change you can spare will make a huge difference and be greatly appreciated. You can donate at: personalchallenge.everydayhero.com/uk/alex-bysouth
