Mount Kilimanjaro: The adventure begins
8:38am Monday 30th January 2012 in Your Say
It took over 24 hours but we're finally here in Tanzania and today we've started our trek after a nice stay in a hotel (no more of that for a week!).
An unsavoury wake up call at 6am ensured we were all ready on time and then began the climb where we saw Mount Kilimanjaro for the first time and it's MASSIVE, probably the biggest thing I've ever seen!
The first day was a six-hour trek through the jungle, where I was really tempted to grab a vine and do a crude Tarzan impression (I didn't, that would have been silly).
The amount of work the sherpas do is unbelievable; Carrying our bags, setting up our tents, cooking surprisingly fantastic food for us, making make shift loos, all whilst having a laugh - there's no way I could do all that and still be smiling!
It was relatively easy going for the first day, a few headaches from people here and there as we reached 3000 metres, which I managed to avoid somehow, however I have a horrible feeling that they're easing us in gently and it will start to get much tougher - 4000 metres tomorrow!
