A SPECIAL bond continues to grow between the supporters of Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons.
During the weekend in Perpignan, it was not a surprise to see supporters donning something in primrose and blue as well as gold and red.
At the paella party in the park, only a few hours before Saturday night’s kick off, Catalans Dragons fans were singing ‘Oh Warry Warry’, while Wolves supporters chanted ‘Cat-a-lans, Cat-a-lans’.
Staff in several cafes in the Castillet area were wearing Warrington Wolves jerseys, with another setting up four television screens in the alfresco dining area so that visiting fans could watch Hull versus Wigan on Sky while enjoying a meal on Friday night.
Catalans Dragons made a big effort for the fans, too, laying on free transport to a giant barbecue evening on the Friday and the paella party on Saturday.
Dragons chiefs continue to pay tribute to the good behaviour and friendship of Warrington fans and treat their home game with Warrington as their biggest of the season.
The relationship between the two clubs and supporters developed in 2006 when more than 3,000 Warrington fans invaded Perpignan for the club’s debut against Catalans.
Since then, Warrington fans got behind Catalans’ Challenge Cup glory bid by roaring them to success over Wigan in the semi final at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2007, around 15,000 Catalans and Wolves supporters joined forces to spread the gospel of rugby league in Barcelona last year for the first game of Super League on Spanish soil.
Cliff Mills, of Bewsey, summed it up as he walked into the centre of Perpignan with wife Christine while wearing his Catalans Dragons top and Warrington Wolves baseball cap.
“I bought this top for Catalans’ semi final against Wigan three years ago,” he said.
“French rugby league has been through a lot and I’ve always felt something for them.
“I definitely buy into the fact that there is something special between Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves.”
