SILKY stand off John Woods arrived at Wilderspool in the twilight of his career but still went on to fly the flag for the club in the 1985-1988 World Cup series.

Woods gained his 11th Great Britain cap as a substitute in the World Cup win against Papua New Guinea at Wigan on October 27, 1987.

He made 72 appearances for Warrington after signing from Bradford in time for the 1987/88 campaign.

Woods, who had previously racked up more than 2,000 points in nine seasons for his hometown club Leigh, continued his machine-like ability to score tries and goals with Warrington.

The 351 points he clocked up from 13 tries and 147 goals (including five drop goals) in the 1987/88 season has not been beaten since at Warrington.
