BREAKING NEWS: Trio guilty of Newlove murder
THREE teenagers have been found guilty of the brutal murder of Garry Newlove outside his home in Fearnhead.
Adam Swellings, aged 19, Stephen Sorton, aged 17, and Jordan Cunliffe, aged 16, were found guilty at Chester Crown Court minutes ago.
Two other defendants, aged 17 and 15, were cleared.
The jury of six men and six women were sent out to consider their verdict on Thursday, January 3.
They unanimously convicted 17-year-old Sorton, from Honister Avenue, Orford, of murder.
The 16-year-old Cunliffe, from Rowlands Close, Cinnamon Brow, was found guilty by a majority of 11 to one, and Swellings, from Meredith Street, Crewe, was found guilty by a majority of 10 to two.
Pandemonium broke out in the court following the verdict although there was no reaction from his wife Helen Newlove.
Swellings had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Mr Newlove was killed outside his home in August after being attacked by a gang of teenagers.
The trial began on November 13, and during the course of it the jury heard evidence from each of Garry Newlove's daughters, Zoe, Danielle and Amy.
A statement to the police by Helen Newlove was also read out in which she described how she saw the aftermath of the attack on her husband.
Each of the five defendants also took to the stand to give their defence.
A trainer belonging to Sorton was found under Mr Newlove's body.
When giving evidence he said that the shoe had come loose and Mr Newlove had landed on it when he fell, pulling it off his foot.
The prosecution said that the shoe became lodged there after Sorton kicked him as Mr Newlove lay on the floor.
Swellings admitted manslaughter and told the court he had started the attack on Mr Newlove - that he had punched him in the face but nothing more.
Various witnesses described seeing the gang surround Mr Newlove, knock him to the floor and kick him.
He died in Warrington Hospital two days after the attack.
