BEN Westwood should be a ‘shoe-in’ for Super League’s Man of Steel award this season, according to his second row partner Trent Waterhouse.
Westwood won his first nomination for the annual award alongside Wigan’s Sam Tomkins and St Helens’ James Roby, with all of Super League’s players voting to recognise impact upon a season.
The 31-year-old, named Warrington Wolves Supporters’ Trust tackler of the year this week, has the chance of scooping the prize at an awards ceremony in Manchester on Monday and Waterhouse believes there is no one better equipped to be named a ‘Man of Steel’.
“Ben is a world class back rower,” said Waterhouse, a State of Origin representative, NRL winner and Australian international.
“He has proved his class on the biggest stages, against club teams and even the Kangaroos on the international stage.
“Ben is unbelievable. He has a massive engine and doesn’t stop because he just has so much heart.
“He is such a great player and I hope we can get him back for Saints on Saturday.”
Westwood stands to become the first Warrington forward to win the award since its inception in 1977, with backs Ken Kelly and Jonathan Davies the only previous Warrington winners in 1981 and 1994 respectively.
