Warrington Wolves boss Tony Smith hot on Ben Currie

RISING star Ben Currie is making it very difficult for Tony Smith to leave him out of his star-studded Warrington Wolves first team.

It is a point acknowledged by Smith himself after seeing the 17-year-old back rower serve up an outstanding performance for Wolves’ under 20s at the weekend.

Currie, a former Golborne Parkside amateur who trains full time alongside the first team, has made two Super League appearances so far this year and created two tries as well as scoring three others in the under 20s’ Valvoline Cup defeat of Castleford Tigers on Saturday.

“Young Ben Currie was unbelievable in the under 20s at the weekend,” said Smith.

“Somebody who plays a couple of first-grade games and then goes back to the 20s can sometimes flatten out and be disappointing at that level.

“But he’s been far from that. He’s gone back and is playing like a Super League player in the under 20s competition.

“That young man’s knocking on the door each and every week from here on in.

“For me to keep him out it means some people in front need to be in good form.

“We’re looking to utilise him at the right effective time for him and bring him on the best we can.”
