KEVIN Ellis is in dreamland!

As an assistant coach with Celtic Crusaders, playing host to his former rugby league club Warrington Wolves in his home town of Bridgend on Saturday is something he could never have dreamt about when contemplating his 1990 switch from rugby union to what was then seen as ‘the professional code’.

“We’re really looking forward to Warrington coming down here to play,” said Ellis, who remains very passionate about the five years he spent with Wolves prior to the arrival of summer rugby and Super League.

“I had a fantastic five years at Warrington and with Warrington coming to town this weekend it brings back all the memories.

“Although my heart is with Crusaders now, it will be split in half.

“It should be a really exciting occasion because I know that the Welsh fans are as fantastic and passionate about rugby league as the Warrington fans.”

Saturday night’s crowd could include Rowland Phillips and Jonathan Davies – two other ex-Warrington players who are massive names on the Welsh rugby scene and great friends of Kevin’s.

Ellis was a talented half back who went on to gain Great Britain honours in his first season in primrose and blue.

He knows how important the regular leading playmaker is to a team and was asking if Lee Briers would be back in Wolves’ ranks this time.

When Celtic visited The Halliwell Jones Stadium in March, Ellis highlighted then concerns about combating Briers and his dangerous kicking game.

Celtic, without a win in their first season of Super League at that point, gave Wolves a fright that day but it was Briers who steered them to victory.

There will be no Briers factor on Saturday, while Celtic have moved on and gained in confidence after achieving their first Super League win at Bradford and more recently their first home win against Wigan.

“We had a good win here against Wigan,” said Ellis.

“Last weekend we were 24-0 behind at St Helens at half time but credit to the boys as they came back and it was only 6-0 in the second half.

“We’ve got to take the positives from that. There were a couple of youngsters playing that day and we might have one or two back from our extensive injury list this week.”
