WOLVES’ Matty Blythe will never forget his home debut for the wrong reasons and now he wants basement club Castleford Tigers to suffer the consequences at The Jungle on Sunday.

Some players may be able to look back on great achievements in their first games for clubs but Blythe’s opening appearance in front of his home fans on Sunday will always be remembered for Hull Kingston Rovers upsetting the applecart with a comeback victory that was settled with the last play of the game.

And that followed the previous week’s despair arising from last-gasp defeat at leaders St Helens, where the 19-year-old back rower caught the eye in his first game back from an ankle injury.

Warrington Guardian sponsored Blythe, who has previously made three away performances for the team and hopes to keep his place until the end of the season, admitted this week: “It’s not nice losing in the last minute. It hurts.

“We’re now going to Castleford with some previous, having been beaten late on for the last two weeks.

“I think Castleford should be getting the backlash this weekend.

“We need to be performing in every game leading into the play-offs.”

The former England Academy international, who started his career in the junior ranks at Rylands Sharks, is certain of something else, too, after gracing The Halliwell Jones Stadium for the first time in a Super League shirt.

“I know that I want to stay here with Warrington,” said Blythe, who is under contract with Wolves until the end of 2009.

“I don’t plan on going anywhere else, hopefully, as I want to play in front of the Warrington fans and do well.

“This is my home town and you can’t ask for anything more than playing in front of 10,000 people in your home town, apart from gaining a win that is.”

The supporters were happy to welcome him to the party on Sunday, with the South Standers chanting his name while Chris Hicks prepared to take the conversion that was to put Wolves in command at 28-12 early in the second half.

“Your focus is on the game and you don’t really notice what’s being said but I gave them a wave,” said Blythe, who was born in Urmston but has lived in Warrington for the last 15 years.

“You don’t want to look like a muppet, do you?”
