STUART Barrow says a poor opening quarter was the downfall of his Wire under 19s side in their trip to Leeds.

The first 20 minutes saw The Wire fall 14-0 behind and they never recovered despite tries from Jordan Olmez and Eribe Doro.

Despite the poor start which led to their fifth defeat in a row, Barrow said he was encouraged by his side’s display for the remainder of the match.

“Leeds have been in fine form and are a very good side, but we really gave them a battle,” he said.

“The opening quarter was disappointing and that is what has cost us, but the way that the lads played after that was very encouraging and gave us plenty of positives to move forward with.

“The way that the lads stuck to their task after that early blitz was very commendable and the final scoreline was very unjust on the players, who gave their all and had a real dig.”

Alfie Goddard, William Scrimshaw and Kiedan Hartley got early tries for Leeds before Olmez got Wolves on the board, powering through to score after being found by Elliot Windley.

The visitors started the second half strongly, but two Tom Holdroyd tries within four minutes of each other settled the game.

Wolves did have the final say, however, when Fynn Stanley’s high kick was fumbled to allow Doro to pick up the loose ball and score.
