BEN Currie’s chat with Wire teammates ahead of a break in New York leaves him feeling eager to join in pre-season training.

The Wolves back-rower, defeated 6-0 with England against Australia in the Rugby League World Cup Final 10 days ago, is yet to taste what it’s like working under the new regime of head coach Steve Price, assistant Andrew Henderson and football manager Kylie Leuluai.

“I’ve had a few phone calls with Steve and we met while over in Australia with England,” said Currie.

“He came to our hotel and had a little chat with the Warrington players.

“It’s all looking good, all positive, and all the lads I’ve spoken to are enjoying it.

“It’s different from what it was but they’re all enjoying it and I can’t wait to get back involved with them after my break in New York away from rugby as I refresh ready for next year.”

Reflecting on his eight-week World Cup experience at the end of a season in which he had spent the majority of his time recovering from knee surgery, Currie acknowledges that reaching the final was a feat in itself.

“I really enjoyed it, it was a great experience,” he said.

“I managed to get my England debut and I was lucky enough to stay in the team, play all the games and get into the World Cup Final.

“We’re gutted with the loss but we’re also really proud of our efforts.

“It would have been so nice to win it, having not made the final for 22 years.

“It’s a great achievement to get to the final but it would have been nice to go one step further and win it.”

Currie roomed with Saints full-back and Cronulla Sharks utility forward Chris Heighington at stages of the tour, which included six hotel changes across Australia and New Zealand.

He added: “Everyone mingled really well and it was a good group to be involved in.”

And he did prove to be a winner among his teammates in the gaming stakes.

“I called it early in the tournament that I’d be FIFA champion, though the lads weren’t too happy about that. I backed it up while I was there and ended coming out on top.”
