ENGLAND missed out on the result they wanted but Warrington Wolves fans loved the Rugby League World Cup 2017 experience Down Under.

They included the Harrison family, who did not have too far to travel to watch the final between Australia and England at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

"We are formally from Great Sankey and are mad Wire fans, season ticket holders for many years," said dad Phil.

"We moved to Brisbane over a year ago and went to the final. We ended up sat with a few young lads who were also Wire fans from Penketh."

Some fans of The Wire decided they just had to drop everything and get themselves to Brisbane for Saturday's decider, in which Australia retained the trophy courtesy of a 6-0 victory over an England side featuring Wolves players Kevin Brown, Ben Currie and Chris Hill.

Among them was John Sherlock, with his son Adam.

"Last week after speaking with several friends already in Brisbane we decided we had to be there," said John, who hails from the town but lives in Kendal while Adam now lives and works in Warrington.

"Watched the Tonga match on TV in the UK and by 8am flights had been booked, packed a bag and left the UK on Monday morning."

Former Woolston Rovers scrum half Stephen Martin made a similar decision, heading to Brisbane for the weekend with his son James from their Dubai home.

"We had a great weekend," he said.

"Just gutted as I thought we (England) had them (Australia).

"Loads of England fans were there which of course led to some great banter, along with all The Wire fans that were there."

Among the people he bumped into was Wolves, Brisbane and Kangaroos legend Alfie Langer, whom Stephen played against for Woolston at Wilderspool in the 2000 Challenge Cup early rounds.

You never know who you will bump into on the other side of the world!

Fellow Wire fans living the dream while attending matches at the Rugby League World Cup in Australia have been letting us know.

Julie Thorniley had her picture taken with injured Aussie superstar Greg Inglis at South Sydney RL Club.

Eileen Leyland and Paula Simpson are part of a group of seven Wire fans out in Australia - and both are celebrating special birthdays!

Eileen is marking her 50th birthday, while Paula turns 60 and they have been celebrating by taking in the semi-final clash between Australia and Fiji at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Wolves fan Andy Mellor has also been out and about in Sydney and has bumped into a few England players on his travels.

Stephen Whitehurst, while checking out the League of Giants statues in Brisbane with his son Adam, bumped into an old friend from Rylands Amateur Rugby League Club and his pals.

Among them was Judith Hunt, who left Warrington 17 years ago to live in Brisbane.

Allan Heron had a nice surprise after catching a quick chat with Wire winger Matty Russell at the end of the Scotland versus Samoa game in Cairns.

He said: "Had a great day at the Scotland v Samoa game. Highlight was chatting to Matty Russell after the game. Top bloke and he even gave me his match shirt (although it was a bit sweaty) - Wire on tour - Wellington next!"

And Ian Talbot and his dad John on their trip of a lifetime caught up with some of the England players in Fremantle, Western Australia, ahead of the final group game in Perth.

Harriet Ellison, who moved to Sydney in March, got the chance to pose for a picture with George Burgess, the injured brother of Sam and Thom currently in the England squad.

There was a surprise in store for Alison Wood ahead of the semi-final between Australia and Fiji, for whom ex-Warrington Wolves prop Ashton Sims stars.

She said: "When you’re sat in a bar at the Street Beach in Brisbane and you spot the Fijian team and Ashton Sims!!! Told him we’ll be wearing our Wire shirts tonight and cheering them on."
