THERE is "a really strong possibility" that Ben Currie will play again this season, Wolves head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith says.

On just his second game back after 10 months out with a cruciate knee ligament injury, the 23-year-old suffered more damage to his knee in the 20-6 win over Widnes on July 20.

Smith had earlier said the new injury was not serious but "hampered his chances" of pulling on a Wolves jersey again before next season.

However, the Wire boss now says the second rower has had good news about his recovery.

"He needs to have some extensive rehab over the next month," he said.

"If he does that well, and he always throws himself into these things, there’s a real strong possibility he’ll be able to play the last couple of games.

"He’s obviously really keen to do that as wants to put himself forward for the World Cup. He’s not ruled that out as a chance, so it’s really good news.

"He’s had slight damage to the knee but nothing dramatic."

Smith also provided an update on the fitness of Joe Westerman, who has been missing since the win over Catalans on June 24 with a hip flexor injury.

"Joe Westerman isn’t far off, at a pinch he could have played this week but he hasn’t quite done enough running," he said.

"He’ll be back in contention for selection next week."
