WOLVES are pleased to be playing again this bank holiday weekend – so that they can quickly try to put right what went dreadfully wrong at Leeds Rhinos last night.

The Wire conceded 28 points in the second half as they fell to their biggest defeat of a disappointing season so far ahead of hosting second-placed Salford Red Devils on Monday, kick off 3pm.

Hooker Matt Parcell led the way in the 40-0 win for Leeds with his first Super League hat-trick since arriving from Australia at the start of the year.

“Leeds have had a couple of substantial defeats themselves. Once the roll starts, it's hard to stop,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith.

“It's how you respond to it that's the important bit. In some ways it's good that we play on Monday. It's horrible when you've got long turnarounds after playing poorly, dwelling on it can eat you up.

“We've only got a few days to dust ourselves off and we can get out there and make some amends.”

Reflecting on the comprehensive defeat at Headingley, Smith said that it was a performance he never saw coming.

“We'd built up well this week, we'd trained well. Some of these performances just come out of the blue,” he said.

“We were hoping to build on last week and build on some of that sort of commitment but there was a bit too much there.

“Once a team gets on a roll it's hard to stop that roll.

“It was not good enough from us. If you play poor, it's not a great place to come to and we were poor with the ball.

“We had a bright opening and in terms of field position we weren't in a bad state.

“I thought our kicking game really hurt us when we didn't finish off some of our sets when we had some dominance in the field position early in the game.

“After that, we started to force some things and some of the errors we made were just not good enough.

“It's a dangerous place to go to and make errors. They've got some dangerous players who capitalise on it.

“We’re hurting. I’ve been on the other end of it a couple of times and had some good days here. Had some bad days too.

“It’s a great place to go when the atmosphere is great and your team’s winning, one of the best places in the world to be. But it wasn’t our night.

“We’re going to make some things happen like that in the future where we do make it our night again.

“A couple of their players rolled back some years. Rob Burrow at the end and Jamie Jones was terrific.

“But you can’t go there and not kick well and not execute well on your attacking plays.”
