TOM Lineham will miss Wolves' next two games after the RFL upheld his Grade C striking charge.

The winger had pleaded guilty to a reckless strike on Leigh's Ryan Hampshire in the incident which saw him sin-binned during Wolves 22-8 defeat to the Centurions on Thursday but challenged the grading of the offence.

However, the RFL's Independent Disciplinary Tribunal decided the charge should still stand and Lineham will now miss Friday's trip to St Helens as well as the home game with former club Hull FC on Saturday, April 1.

Lineham has also been handed a fine of £300 for a charge Wolves boss Tony Smith had previously called 'over the top.'

Smith admitted Lineham was wrong to lash out at Hampshire, who was penalised for obstruction, but hoped his exemplary previous record would count in his favour.

“The severity of it is a little over the top I think,” he said ahead of Lineham's tribunal.

“He’s been given a Grade C for something that’s quite incidental and the replays make it look worse than what it is.

“He hits the bloke with the fleshy part of his arm rather than his elbow. When you watch the whole thing, the kid doesn’t even grasp his face or anything.

“Tommy shouldn’t have lashed out in the way he did. You’re entitled to do something when you’re on a run to the try line and someone grabs hold of you, but unfortunately that was contact with the opposition’s head.

“He’s got a good record, he’s never been sin-binned or sent off in his six years as a professional and I’m not sure he’s intentionally hurt even a fly in that time. He’s just not that type of player.”
