TONY Smith believes Wolves’ 27-18 World Club Series victory over Brisbane Broncos will be “talked about for years.”

The Wire produced a scintillating performance to stun the NRL side and pick up their first competitive win over Australian opposition.

Smith was full of praise for his side’s performance but stressed the importance of carrying their momentum into the upcoming Super League games.

“People in the stands will talk about that for 20, 30, 40 years,” he said.

“They showed they can be dangerous and they've got speed to burn but I had faith in my team. They were determined, you could see that from the kick off.

“We represented ourselves in the right sort of way, we showed that in our skill levels. It was controlled and skilful.

“We knew some of the style that was coming, it was a different thing handling it. You saw in the first half we were pretty well prepared.

“We're really pleased, hopefully it kick starts us to get going now. It's hard to get in full flow early but hopefully that helps us. We need to carry on with this now.

“It's shown us how we can play when we put our mind to it.”

Tries from debutant Kevin Brown, Ryan Atkins and Matty Russell put Wolves in command and gave them a 20-0 lead inside the first quarter of the game.

Corey Oates got Brisbane on the board before Tom Lineham’s try rounded off a superb first half at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

James Roberts and David Mead crossed for the NRL side in the second half, but Dec Patton’s penalty and drop goal kept them at arm’s length.

Brown’s try stemmed from Joe Westerman charging down Ben Hunt’s kick, one of two successful chargedowns, and Smith says it affected the Broncos star’s performance.

He also lauded his side’s excellent completion rate and the performance of debutant Brown and others.

“Chargedowns make good kickers think twice about their kicking,” he said.

“Ben Hunt's first kick was charged down and it affects you.

“We try to have a decent completion rate but we try to play a bit of rugby league as well.

“Getting the right balance is important but we executed all of that very well.

“I think it was 55 minutes before we made our first error. If we do that most weeks we'll certainly be in the game.

“Kevin Brown was terrific. He showed some great class and control.

“Our big people were terrific, Coops left the way and Ashton's first stint was really strong. Jack was outstanding and so was Joe Westerman.”
